You’ve filed your claim with the CA EDD!

In an effort to provide transparency around what might come next, we’ve detailed below common notices and requests from the EDD’s end, as well as typical timelines to payment.

State Disability Insurance Claims

When filed online, SDI claims typically take 1-3 weeks to be processed after your medical provider has successfully provided their medical certification. If your medical provider has not yet completed their certification, your claim will remain as a Pending Disability Insurance Claim Application(s).

Once certified, your claim will move to the Current Disability Insurance Claim(s) section with Claim ID instead of receipt number.

For SDI claims filed via paper forms, it typically takes 8-10 weeks for the EDD to process your claim.

Common Notices

1. Notice of Computation

The Notice of Computation is received once the EDD has begun processing your claim. Distribution of your Notice of Computation does not mean that your claim has been approved. Instead, it provides you with a summary of your wages for your base period and the breakdown of the weekly benefit rate you can expect to receive upon approval.

Your claim is not officially approved until distribution of your first benefit payment.

Please note that if you are receiving benefits from a private insurance disability claim as well, the carrier will often require a copy of your state Notice of Computation prior to disbursing any payment. We recommend forwarding a copy of your state Notice of Computation to your private insurance case manager as soon as you receive it.

2. Request for Delivery Information (for pregnancy related disability only)

Once your little one has made their arrival and your claim has been filed, the EDD will typically make a Request for Delivery Information. Though you may have confirmed your delivery method on the disability claim directly, the EDD will often request confirmation after your claim has been filed and before decision-ing your claim.

3. Notice of Automatic Payment

The Notice of Automatic Payment serves to inform you that you will receive automatic payment through the duration of your approved leave. We recommend only completing the attached form if your leave dates have changed, you’ve returned to work earlier than anticipated, or if received after your leave has ended. Completion of this form requires a declaration that you have returned to work, so if it is completed while you are still actively out on leave, it will stop your disability payments. You will receive this notice from the EDD in your online portal inbox and/or mailed to your mailing address.

4. Claim for Continued Benefits

Oftentimes, the EDD will issue a Claim for Continued Benefits which effectively pauses your disability payments until completed. Most commonly, the EDD will request a Claim for Continued Benefits if your disability is extended beyond the initial medical certification or if the time recommended by your provider extends beyond the standard recovery time for your specific diagnosis. However, the EDD will sometimes send this request out randomly, so it is helpful to keep an eye out for any messages in your SDI portal inbox, physical notices in the mail, or emails from the EDD’s end.

Please note that the EDD will not accept this form until the Certification Period End date has passed. The best day to submit is on the due date. If the due date has passed, submit this form as soon as possible. You may receive multiple of these requests for certification throughout your time out on leave.

5. Physician/Practitioner’s Supplementary Certificate

You will receive this notice from the EDD in your inbox online and/or mailed to your mailing address. However, there is no action required of you unless you intend to extend your leave beyond the originally certified leave end date. Should your leave need to be extended your medical provider will need to complete the supplemental certification online or by paper.

The EDD will automatically mail you a copy of the Physician/Practitioner’s Supplementary Certificate after your original claim end date has passed.

If you do not intend to extend your disability period, please feel free to disregard this form.

If needed, once your medical provider has completed their portion you will receive a message in your inbox advising new medical information has been received.

6. Claim for Paid Family Leave (New Mother) - Pregnancy Related Disability Only

Once your disability claim has been paid out, you will receive a notice to file your Paid Family Leave claim. The EDD will automatically mail you a physical copy of the PFL claim form, as well as issue this notice in your online portal. If you file your PFL claim online, you do not need to submit the paper claim.

Paid Family Leave Claims

While the EDD allows Paid Family Leave claims to be filed online via the SDI portal, they do not provide any online support or claim insight for PFL claims. Any communications from the EDD regarding your PFL claim will arrive in the mail, as necessary or they may call you requesting additional information.

Typically, we see that it takes between 2-4 weeks for the EDD to process and decision Paid Family Leave claims that are filed online. For PFL claims filed via paper forms, the processing time can take up to two months, due to a backlog of paper claims.

For any questions or insight into your PFL claim, you can connect with a representative using the following phone tree:

  1. Call (877) 238-4373 Monday through Friday from 8am-5pm

    1. We typically recommend calling just before 8am, so you’re finishing the below flow as their lines open at 8am. EDD phone lines often fill up quickly, so it’s helpful to call in as early as you’re able to. Additionally, it can often be easier to get through during the afternoon hours between 2p-3p.
