What is DC PFML?
DC Paid Family Leave (PFML) provides wage replacement benefits when you take time off work for a qualifying reason — including bonding with a new child, caring for a family member with a serious health condition, your own serious health condition, or prenatal care.
🧾 What You’ll Need Before You Start
Before you submit a claim, make sure you have:
1. A Qualifying Event
You must have experienced a qualifying event that triggers your need for leave — for example:
Birth or adoption of a child
Care of a family member with a serious health condition
Your own serious medical condition or prenatal care
You generally must apply within 30 days of your qualifying event for full benefits for dates already taken. If you apply later than 30 days, you can still request future dates of leave.
2. Documentation to Support Your Claim
Depending on your leave type, you’ll need proof such as:
Parental Leave
Birth certificate or hospital record with the baby’s birth date
Adoption/placement documents showing date of placement and your name as parent
Family Leave
Family Medical Certification (PFL-FMC) form completed by your healthcare provider
Proof of family relationship (e.g., birth certificate, marriage license)
Medical Leave
Medical Leave Medical Certification (PFL-MMC) form completed by your healthcare provider
Prenatal Leave
Prenatal Leave Medical Certification (PFL-PMC) form completed by your healthcare provider
