How do employees plan a caregiver leave?

When an employee begins a leave plan in Cocoon, “Caregiver leave” is available as an option.

During the planning flow, Cocoon:

  • Identifies the employee’s benefit state

  • Asks who they will be caring for

  • Confirms whether the relationship is covered under applicable leave laws and eligibility rules

For example:

  • Under the FMLA, covered relationships include those with a parent, spouse, or child.

  • Under CFRA in California, parent-in-law relationships are also covered.

If an employee selects a relationship that is not covered based on their eligibility, Cocoon will flag it and prompt them to contact support for a review of next steps.

Compliance, claims, and pay

Compliance

Cocoon sends all required eligibility and designation notices to employees taking caregiver leave. People teams do not need to manage state-specific requirements, as Cocoon handles compliance workflows.

Claims

In states with paid family leave programs, employees are responsible for submitting their own caregiver leave claims. In states without paid programs, no claims are required.

Pay
