The CA EDD (CA Employment Development Department) can be tough to get ahold of due to the volume of people trying to reach representatives on a daily basis. Reasons for calling can vary depending on the claim and situation. For example, you may need to call the EDD because:

  • You are returning to work early or extending your leave and need to make a change to the dates on your claim.

  • The EDD mailed you a notice requesting you call them to provide additional information relevant to your claim.

  • The EDD believes you are receiving full wages (The EDD often misunderstands "top up pay" as full wages. Sometimes, to process your claim, the EDD will require further explanation of the difference between "top up pay" and regular wages.

  • There was an error on your claim and you need to correct this information directly with the EDD.

  • Your claim was filed after the due date (EDD disability claims must be filed within 49 days of disability onset and Paid Family Leave claims must be filed within 41 days of the first day of leave).

This step by step guide will show you how you can submit a claim correction request/change/inquiry/etc. to the CA EDD without needing to call the EDD!

Due to privacy considerations and the sensitive nature of short term disability and paid family leave claims, the EDD will only communicate with the claimant directly.

How to Submit a Request to the CA EDD

One of the most troubling things that can happen when filing an EDD claim is finding out that there was an error after your claim has already been submitted. This is particularly difficult for CA EDD PFL (bonding) claims because there is no visibility into the status of the PFL claim once it's been submitted.

That being said, there is a way to submit a question/inquiry/change/etc through a portal, so you can avoid calling the EDD!

Disability inquiry example here:

  1. Select ‘Disability Insurance Benefits’

2. Select ‘Miscellaneous Inquiry’

3. Select 'Learn More'

4. Select 'Continue'

  • Next, you will need to fill in all the information fields except the EDD Client Number. Fill in your SSN instead.

Complete "Additional Information" and then click "submit."

When completing this section always include:

    • CA EDD Claim #

    • Claim type

    • Date of submission

    • Detailed and clear description of what you need fixed or changed on your EDD claim.
