Massachusetts Paid Family and Medical Leave

Under the Massachusetts PFML program, anyone who works in Massachusetts is eligible to take up to 26 weeks of paid leave for medical or family reasons. PFML is funded through a Massachusetts tax, through contributions from both the employer and the employee. Please see full Massachusetts requirements for Employers.

Employers must complete quarterly filings and submit contributions to PFML through your MassTaxConnect account. If you do not already have an account, please create one. Once you have an account established, Cocoon requests the following information in order to add ourselves as an additional profile on your account:

Why does Cocoon request access to my employer Account?

Cocoon requests authorized access to your employer MA Paid Family and Medical Leave Account in order to file employer notices on your behalf for employees filing claims and seeking benefits through the state PFML program.

Once an employee submits a leave, the employer will receive an email that an application for paid family or medical leave benefits has been submitted. Once that application is submitted, the employer will have ten business days to review it and complete the employer section. If the employer section is not completed during this timeframe it may result in a delay of benefits or a complete denial of that employee’s claim. With access to your account, Cocoon will also receive these leave notification emails, and will complete the employer section of the claim on your behalf!

Access to your MA Paid Family and Medical Leave employer account also allows Cocoon to see the status of claims; however, we do not have visibility into payment amounts issued on those claims and require your employees to self-report benefit amounts received in order to reconcile payroll.

If Cocoon is unable to get access to my MassTaxConnect account, what is the impact?

If Cocoon is unable to access your MA Paid Family and Medical Leave account, we are unable to complete the employer section of an employee claim online on the employer’s behalf. As a result, if you do not action the request yourself, an employee may be denied access to benefit payments through the MA PFML program. Cocoon will try to do all the heavy lifting when it comes to filing claim forms on your behalf, however, we need your assistance with getting access.
