Oregon has two main pieces of paid leave legislation: Paid Leave Oregon ("PLO") and Oregon Family Leave Act ("OFLA"). PLO provides job-protected time and pay for eligible employees, whereas OFLA provides only job-protected time

Updates to Oregon's paid leave legislation with Senate Bill 1515

With SB1515, Oregon Legislature made substantial updates to the Oregon Family and Medical Leave Act (OFLA), effective as of July 1, 2024. These amendments aim to streamline and clarify leave entitlements under OFLA and streamline redundancies between OFLA and PLO.

Here’s are a few important things to know about these changes:

  1. Reduced OFLA leave reasons: The amendments to OFLA have removed several categories of unpaid leave that were previously protected. This means certain types of leave that were previously guaranteed under OFLA may no longer qualify for OFLA protection, although they may still qualify for PLO protection.

  2. Employer notification requirement: Starting July 1, 2024, covered employers are obligated to provide written notice to employees affected by these changes. This notice is necessary if the employer had previously designated or approved any leave as protected under OFLA.

For more detailed information or assistance navigating these changes, consult your legal counsel or read more about the changes here.
